GALLOWAY – More than 150 bars and taverns from Asbury Park to Cape May have pledged to promote a designated driver program established in memory of Navy Ensign John Elliott of Egg Harbor Township.

Under the Jersey Shore Heroes program, they will serve free soft drinks to designated drivers who provide safe rides home for their friends. Launched in June, the program also enables designated drivers to easily identify participating establishments through a link on the organization’s website, jerseyshoreheroes.org, and social media outlets. The establishments also display signs.

“We’re pleased to have so many bars, taverns and restaurants along the Jersey Shore participating in the campaign,” said Bill Elliott, John’s father and co-founder of the Hero Campaign along with his wife Muriel. “When patrons see the Hero campaign sticker on the door of a bar or tavern, they know the establishment is committed to keeping them safe.”
