Uber, HERO Campaign offer discounted rides on the Jersey Shore
(NEW JERSEY) — Today, Uber and the John R. Elliott HERO Campaign for Designated Drivers announced a new initiative to prevent drunk driving on the Jersey Shore this summer. Beginning on June 26, the first 2,000 people to take the HERO Pledge to prevent drunk driving will receive a code valid for up to $10 off an Uber ride anywhere in New Jersey.
Founded with the goal of signing up one hundred thousand designated drivers, the HERO Campaign works across New Jersey to raise awareness about the need for responsible ride options and honors the memory of Navy Ensign John R. Elliott of New Jersey, who was killed in a collision with a drunk driver in July, 2000, two months after graduating from the United States Naval Academy.
“Taking the HERO Pledge is about making a commitment to prioritize safety on the road when alcohol is involved,” said HERO Campaign Chairman Bill Elliott, John Elliott’s father. “Whether you’re calling an Uber for your friends or acting as their designated driver, we want to make sure that no one is getting behind the wheel when they’ve had too much to drink.”
“It is an honor to have Bill Elliott and other representatives from The HERO Campaign in Sea Isle City – and we are very happy to host the launch of their new program, which will no doubt reduce drunk driving and greatly raise awareness,” said Mayor Leonard Desiderio. “Partnering with Uber will go a long way to help the HERO Campaign’s cause – and we applaud all the hard work that’s being done to save lives.”
As part of Uber’s ongoing work with the HERO Campaign, nearly 500 Uber driver-partners took the HERO Pledge last week, agreeing to be on the road whenever possible for nights and weekends when they are most needed to prevent drunk driving. Uber data shows that ride requests typically spike when bars begin closing late at night.
“When it’s possible to push a button on your phone and get a safe ride in minutes, there’s never an excuse for driving while under the influence,” said Uber General Manager Sarfraz Maredia. “We urge everyone on the Jersey Shore to plan ahead, take the HERO Pledge, and celebrate responsibly this summer.”

How to take the HERO Pledge and get your $10 Uber code*:
- Visit org/Uber/ or text HEROUBER to 51555 to receive an automatic response with a link to the pledge form
- Complete and submit the pledge form
- On the confirmation screen (and in a confirmation email) you will receive a unique Uber promo code
- Open the Uber app
- Select PAYMENT from the app menu.
- Tap Add Promo Code.
- Enter your promo code and tap Apply.
- You’ll receive $10 off the next Uber trip you take that starts in New Jersey
*The first 2,000 people to take the HERO Pledge beginning on June 26, 2017 will receive a unique Uber code valid for $10 off one ride beginning anywhere in New Jersey. The codes expire on June 26, 2018 and will apply on all Uber ride options, including uberX, uberPOOL, uberXL and UberBLACK.
