LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky has joined the designated driver campaign known as the HERO Campaign to help end drunken driving deaths and injuries.

Gov. Steve Beshear launched the campaign in the state Tuesday, encouraging people to participate in designated driver programs and drive sober.

A statement from Beshear’s office says the HERO program works with schools, businesses, law enforcement agencies and other organizations to promote the use of safe and sober designated drivers. The effort encourages bars and restaurants to serve free soft drinks to sober designated drivers and asks schools to integrate the campaign into drunken driving prevention and educational programs.

The HERO Campaign was inspired by Navy Ensign John Elliott, who was killed by a drunken driver in 2000. Elliott’s parents joined Beshear in Louisville as he signed a proclamation Tuesday.
